The Questions To Ask When Thinking About A Dock Outside Your Home On The Water

A boat dock outside your waterfront house can give you a place to keep your boat tied up and provide a great place to lounge on the water. It can be a tough project; if you decide to undertake it, start with these two questions.

What Kind of Material Will the Dock Be?

Choosing what kind of dock you want to look at is the first thing you need to decide; vinyl and wood are popular choices. This is largely a question of personal preference, but it’s worth noting that if you select wood, make sure that it is chemically treated to withstand water and sunlight. You might think you’ll just save money by purchasing untreated wood, but if you do, you’ll have to deal with rotting or warping over time. Not only that, but natural wood can be harder to cut through because of the naturally-occurring knots and imperfections in the wood. It can make construction time take that much longer.

You might want to avoid the possible problems with wood and go with vinyl. Vinyl can be better-suited to the sun and water, and can even be bought in a style that looks like wood, if you like.

What Kind of Support Will the Dock Have?

The part of the deck you’ll see when you look out your window is just one of the things you need to ask yourself about. You also need to consider the support that the dock will have. Some people create floating docks, which usually consist of the wood or vinyl planks being placed on top of barrels. You might sway or feel a little unsure walking on a floating dock, but it can function well if the dock surface is wide enough. Not only that, but in the case of a strong storm, a floating dock can be put on land easily.

If you would rather have another kind of support for your dock, wood or metal pilings can be used underneath the surface. This can be a costlier choice because the pilings have to be driven into the ground and secured, which can be a challenge;  you are likely to need a contractor to do install the dock for you. You might also need to go to your town’s permits office to find out if you need to submit paperwork about the dock. Docks made with pilings can be very sturdy and you won’t have to wonder if you’re getting adequate support when you’re on the dock. This can be a good choice if you plan to use your dock often.

Insights On Getting A Competition Shooting Belt Ready For A Beginner Event

Competition shooting is an inclusive sport intended for anyone and everyone who wishes to test their skills in a positive, encouraging environment. The sport is proud of the many legendary figures who have shattered records with their amazing speed and accuracy. Seasoned vets are not the only ones who make up the sport. Novice and beginner divisions accommodate those who want to give competition shooting a try. Investing in a high-quality leather shooting belt is a must for newbies. A leather belt, however, cannot go from a store shelf to around the buyer’s waist at the competition range. There are a few things to do with the belt to get the accessory ready for practice and competition time.

Wearing the Belt at Home

The belt has to be more than merely comfortable to wear. The belt has to feel almost like a proverbial second skin. Being used to the strap makes quick reloading a lot easier. The belt also becomes less distracting when the wearer hardly even knows it’s there. The only way to develop such a reliable level of comfort is to wear the belt frequently. Donning the belt around the house — without a holstered gun — allows a competitor to get used to the accessory. Additionally, the leather or other material ends up breaking in. The material becomes less stiff, which adds to the comfort level.

Practicing with the Belt

Frequent sessions at the shooting range with the belt do more than just break in the leather. The leather bends and yields in accordance to activity specific movements, aiding the material in complementing the wearer’s physical nuances. This does work both ways. The wearer also has to get used to the belt in an activity specific environment, and this is why practicing with the belt is important.

Exercising with the Belt

For action-oriented competition, the competitor may have to move from place-to-place quickly while drawing and shooting a weapon. Wearing the belt while safely performing low-impact movement exercises helps make wearing the belt feel much more natural when the time comes to aggressively move to complete a task.

Requesting a Gunsmith to Soften the Leather

There are many different solvents available to soften a leather belt. Applying a solvent to loosen stiff leather is a good idea, but the application has to be done right. The wrong amount of solvent could warp, stain, or otherwise ruin a perfectly good belt. Such a strap would be useless in a competition. Asking a gunsmith to treat the leather helps you avoid any mishaps.

A Custom Single-Shot Bolt-Action Rifle Could Be the Perfect Pick for Grizzly-Bear Hunting

Hunting can be extremely challenging, but those who have been hunting traditional prey for a long time may now be up for a serious challenge. Chasing monster predators such as grizzly bears brings forth a challenge few hunters are capable of handling. The truly adventurous may wish to bring down a grizzly by hunting the beast with a powerful single-shot rifle. If this is your goal, a special order for a reliable custom long-action rifle might be a good path.

Making a Long-Range Precision Shot

A custom-made bolt-action rifle may be crafted in such a way that the shot released from the chamber takes flight with great precision. Upon spotting a grizzly 200 yards away, you must hit the target in the kill zone with extreme accuracy. A properly weighted and balanced custom rifle helps with this goal. Long-range shots, however, may not be the only ones that have to be made.

Making the Critical Short-Range Shot

In bear country, there is always the risk of stumbling on the huge animal by surprise. Bears may make a den under “downed trees or in brush piles,” and an enraged bear may charge a hunter if they happen upon the animal and startle it. With precious moments to spare, in this case, the hunter has to make the single rifle shot count. Custom rifles may help the cause since their design boosts accuracy.

Enhancing Accuracy

The recoil and vibrations caused by high-caliber bear loads can impact accuracy, and the added stress of falling into a bear attack make performing a vital shot even more difficult. With a custom-made rifle, the design could aid in improving accuracy by installing the most appropriate stock and barrel. An assembly line–produced bear rifle might not be the perfect match for the hunter. Safety could be compromised as a result. A custom rifle made to the specifications of the customer is sure to be a better fit. The right rifle alone won’t guarantee an ideal outcome, but the odds of a preferred outcome should increase.

Providing Personal Details

Giving the gunsmith accurate details about the shooter could help greatly with customizing the rifle. Basic stats such as the height, weight, and age of the hunter paints a picture in the mind of the gunsmith. Perhaps the gunsmith knows someone who matches the physical dimensions of the customer. The gunsmith’s friend may be chosen to test fire the rifle which, in turn, gives the gunsmith ideas about improvements such as fixing the balance or lengthening the stock.

The right rifle for the right hunter makes for a smoother, safer hunting trip. Talk to a company such as Southwest Precision LLC for more information.

Perform These Tasks To Keep Your Outboard Motor Working Well

An outboard motor can be a great way to power your canoe or other small boat. However, you may be so interested in all your boating activities that you aren’t paying much attention to the motor itself. To make sure that it keeps working well, here are some things you can do.

Perform Frequent Inspections

One of the best things you can do for your outboard motor is to inspect it on a regular basis. An inspection doesn’t have to be a formal affair; you simply have to take note of whether the motor and its parts seem intact and without damage. Inspect the motor for rust, be sure that none of the hoses are punctured or torn and look for signs of a fuel leak underneath the motor.

Another thing to look at is whether the motor is attached properly to the boat itself. Check the clamps to ensure they aren’t rusting and look for any signs that the hull of your boat is not bent as a result of using a motor that is too large.

Check Fuel Filter

It’s a smart idea to locate and check out the fuel filter periodically. The filter is in place to remove small particles and debris from the fuel so that no debris enters the engine. Over time, the filter itself can become dirty and clogged. If that happens, it can no longer do its job, and that can cause problems for the motor.  For instance, one sign that your filter isn’t working well is that your motor may no longer be achieving high speeds. You may think that’s normal wear and tear, but replacing a dirty filter may very well make high speeds possible again.

The filter is typically located inside the casing of your motor. Once you’ve got the casing open, the filter should be easily visible, as it is in a cylindrical container that looks like a soda can and is generally located near where you put the fuel into the tank. Sometimes, the container is labeled. You can pop open the container and have a look at the filter itself to see if it is black and clogged. If so, you may need to replace it by going to a marine supply shop and getting a newer one.

To know where exactly the fuel filter is in your particular model, reference the owners manual.  If you can’t locate the manual, write down the brand name and either call the manufacturer directly or peruse their website to see if they have an online manual for you to check out.

If you make use of this information, your outboard motor will keep working well. Consult a motor retailer such as All Seasons Honda & Peninsula Ski-Doo to learn more.

Plan Your Next Birthday Celebration On A Chartered Boat

Why spend your birthday at a boring backyard gathering or restaurant for dinner when you can celebrate on a boat? With a chartered boat birthday celebration, you can enjoy the tranquility of the water and the luxury of a chartered cruise. If you have a birthday coming up, here are just a handful of tips that can help you take your boat celebration to the next level.

Keep The Guest List Exclusive

Be ultra-selective when it comes to the people you invite. Once you’ve set sail and are out on the water, getting away from an obnoxious person will pretty much be impossible. Don’t feel obligated to invite someone simply because they are a friend or close relative. If you can’t really stand to be around them on land, the water will be no different. This tip is especially important if you plan to serve alcohol at your event.

Remember To Consider Comfort

Provided you make your reservation early, the boat charter company will likely allow you to choose which time of the day you want to plan your party. Make sure you are keeping comfort in mind. For instance, a midday cruise might seem like a great idea, but if you’re planning it in the middle of the summer, it might be too hot to comfortably enjoy the exterior areas of the boat. Choose a time of day that will ensure everyone is comfortable.

Don’t Forget The Entertainment

You can ensure there is never a dull moment on your cruise by booking entertainment. Fortunately, many boat charter companies have a house band or DJ. If they don’t, they have direct relationships with entertainment acts they can secure on your behalf. Having dinner on one deck and music on another creates flexible spaces for each guest to enjoy at their own leisure.

Choose Your Menu Wisely

Whether you’re having the menu catered by the boat charter company or on your own, choose your menu wisely. Consider water conditions. For example, during a windy period, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have liquid-based selections on the menu, like soup. The high winds will only cause the boat to sway, which will ultimately send these liquid-based selections splatted all over your guests. Also consider theme, if you’re planning an all-white boat party, you should probably stay away from heavily sauced selections.

The more effort you put into planning your birthday boat celebration the more enjoyable the experience for your guests and most importantly, the more enjoyable and memorable the experience for you. Contact a business, such as Chicago Watercraft, for more information.

4 Cool Whale Watching Destinations

If you want to see whales in the wild, then you should look for a whale watching tour. These are guided boat tours that take you out into the ocean and give you the opportunity to see whales in their natural habitat. The tours don’t go too far off shore, so it’s something you can do in a single afternoon.

Below are 4 of the best places to go for a whale-watching trip.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Vancouver Island is located off the west coast of Canada. It’s right across from Vancouver. Even though it is located near one of the largest metropolitan cities in Canada, Vancouver Island is a nature lover’s paradise. Tourists flock there to see Grizzly and Black bears on the islands remote stretches. For those who want to see whales, especially the Killer Whales (aka Orcas), then Vancouver Island is perfect. The cold waters off the coast are prefect for the enormous Grey whale, as well as Orca pods.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor is located on a small island off the coast of Maine. It is a very popular summer resort town. People love to hike and ride bikes in the national park, as well as take whale watching boats out into the Atlantic Ocean. The whales that you might see off the coast of Maine include Humpback and Finback. Another cool thing to do when on the island is to take a coastal boat trip and see some of the water birds that live up on Maine, such as the beautiful Puffin.

Provincetown, Mass

Provincetown is located on Cape Cod. It’s accessible by ferry from mainland Massachusetts. The town used to be a central port in the whaling industry. However, nowadays the whales are not hunted and killed, but rather admired for their natural grace and beauty. The main whale type that you will spot off of Provincetown is the Humpback whale. When you are out on the boat you might also spot a school of dolphins swimming by.

 Dominican Republic

If you want a really immersive whale watching experience, you might want to consider traveling down to the Dominican Republic. There is a special area off of the cost of the Dominican Republic called the Silver Bank. This is a shallow area in the ocean. The advantage of this shallow area is that you can see the whales when they are swimming underwater, not just when they come up for air. For the truly adventurous, you can even take a scuba diving excursion and swim alongside humpback whales in the Silver Bank area.
